Dry Needling
What Is Dry Needling?
Trigger point dry needling involves the insertion of very fine needles into myofascial trigger points, or painful knots in muscles, that can limit range of motion, cause local tenderness, or refer pain to other areas.
When the needle is inserted into the trigger point, it can help stimulate a healing response via increased blood flow and other biochemical changes within the muscle. It is referred to as dry needling because no liquid is used with the needle in contrast to other types of needles used for common injections, vaccinations, etc.
What Conditions Are Treated?
Trigger point dry needling can be used to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal issues including, but not limited to:
- Neck pain
- Back pain
- Headaches
- Jaw pain
- Shoulder pain
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer's elbow
- Hip and gluteal pain
- Knee pain
- Achilles tendinitis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Chronic pain
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
After treatment, patients generally experience improvement in their symptoms including increased range of motion and decreased pain. There may be some soreness and/or possible bruising associated with the treated areas. This soreness may begin in a few hours or even the next day but typically does not last for more than 24-48 hours.
